One movement of this piece opens with the fortissimo motif [read slowly] “G, E-flat, up to A, down to B” played by the brass, a cryptogram of alternate letters of the composer’s name. In 2000, Colin Matthews composed an addition to this piece subtitled “the Renewer.” (10[1])The first movement of this piece begins with strings playing (10[1])a 5/4 (-5[1])(“five-four”) col legno (“LAIN-yo”) ostinato with brass fanfare.
