One movement of this piece opens with the fortissimo motif [read slowly] “G, E-flat, up to A, down to B” played by the brass, a cryptogram of alternate letters of the composer’s name. In 2000, Colin Matthews composed an addition to this piece subtitled “the (-5[1])Renewer.” The first movement of this piece begins with (10[1])strings playing a 5/4 (“five-four”) col legno (10[2])(“LAIN-yo”) ostinato (10[1])with brass fanfare.
